Plastic drum wear
It's not random wear. Most houses in Paloma Creek went up around 2008, and that build year shipped with a specific combination - galvanized aircraft cable spooled onto a molded plastic drum. That drum holds up fine for the first decade. After roughly fifteen years of Texas heat cycling, the plastic gets brittle, the groove deforms, and the cable starts cutting sideways instead of winding evenly.
